For many military veterans, the most difficult battles begin after their service ends. As the nation marks National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Day on Friday, one North Texas nonprofit is helping veterans heal invisible wounds through an unexpected method: horse therapy.

At a ranch in Denton County, veterans like Tech. Sgt. Jay Mulford are learning to connect with horses—and themselves.

"F-16s don't move when you're trying to get in them," Mulford joked while mounting a horse named Teddy. "They're about the same height, though."

Confidence and connection

Mulford, who is transitioning out of the U.S. Air Force Reserve after more than 15 years, said working with horses requires a similar kind of confidence as installing weapon systems on jets, but with a deeper emotional component.

"These are 1,500-pound animals," he said. "You be calm around them, they'll be calm around you. That helps with my communication skills and feeling my emotions more—and relaying that to my family, like, 'Hey, I'm feeling this way.'"

Finding purpose again

One of the hardest parts of returning to civilian life, veterans say, is losing the camaraderie and sense of purpose that comes with military service.

"It was difficult. I mean, it's still difficult now," said Miranda Limon, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. "But not as difficult as it used to be, due to going to different therapies and trying to figure out what's going to help me."

Limon said being around horses helps her reconnect with the person she was before her four years in the Marine Corps.

"I feel happy after I leave here," she said. "I don't have to worry about anything else. It's just me and the horses and the veterans that were here with."

Freedom Reigns program

The equine therapy program, called Freedom Reigns, is an eight-week course designed specifically for military veterans. It's offered at no cost through a partnership between the Denton County Military Veteran Peer Network and Riding Unlimited, Stable Strides Farm and GallantFew.

"There are things that they struggle with that you can't see," said Becca Hobby, the network's community engagement director. "What we get to do is bring them together and see them come into community and heal those wounds together."

Fighting isolation with community

Casey Brown, executive director of the Denton County Military Veteran Peer Network, said the goal is to reduce isolation — a major risk factor for suicide and substance use among veterans.

"If we can get them out of isolation, get them around other people, get them on horses, start building that community, then that's going to reduce that isolation," Brown said.

Freedom Reigns is one of the Veteran Impact activities funded by a recent $300,000 grant from Texas Health Resources. Veteran Impact is a collaboration between Denton MHMR and Military Veteran Peer Network to increase access to mental health care, peer support, and long-term recovery for veterans by hosting peer events, providing mobile counseling services, and offering transportation

A source of hope

"Seeing and hearing the stories of the veterans, where they have just completely changed the way they approach issues, or that they don't feel alone anymore—that's what we want to see," said Julie Wright, with Texas Health Resources Community Hope. "It's really about developing a source of hope for the community."

As protests continue across North Texas, one sheriff is making it clear that while peaceful demonstrations are protected, any acts of violence or property damage will be met with swift consequences.

Denton County Sheriff Tracy Murphree posted a strongly worded message on social media this week, emphasizing his department's preparedness and willingness to act.

"The citizens of Denton County pay me to keep the peace ... they also pay me to kick some a** if necessary," Murphree said in a Facebook post.

As of Friday evening, the post had received more than 2,100 reactions, 240 comments and 1,000 shares.

Four of the at least 15 "No Kings" anti-Trump protests planned in North Texas are scheduled to take place Saturday in Denton County:

Murphree's full statement reads as follows:

"The right to peaceful assembly is a sacred right guaranteed to all Americans. Let me be clear, this is not California. We will not tolerate destruction of property, nor will we stand idly by and allow it to take place.

"Any violence towards any of my officers will be met with force. If my officers feel they are in imminent danger of death or injury the violence will be met with deadly force. We will protect the life and property of our citizens. We will protect our lives.

"My deputies have been advised to not back down to do their duty and arrest those who violate the law. The citizens of Denton County pay me to keep the peace ... they also pay me to kick some a** if necessary. Protest til your hearts content. Cross the line and it will be met with consequences."

Murphree, a former Texas Ranger, has been the Denton County sheriff since 2017. He was first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020 and 2024.

Denton has a new smoke shop. Its name may sound familiar.

Cheech & Chong’s Apothicaria, exclusively franchised by Dreamz Capital Investments, has several locations in North Texas — and the idea was developed by Denton County native and University of North Texas alumnus Andrew Brandt, who’s now a business partner of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong.

Now open in the former Boca 31 spot on Bell Avenue, Cheech & Chong’s Apothicaria is a homecoming for Brandt. Dreamz was founded by Brandt and father and son John and Cody Fisher.

Brandt completed his degree in business entrepreneurship in 2006 at UNT, where he said he got “a great degree.”

“[I] grew a career and then eventually landed a relationship with Cheech and Chong and developed [this] concept,” Brandt said. “Now, I get to bring it back to Denton.”

Brandt and the Fishers started a brand called CBD Pros USA in 2018, then while setting up dispensaries in New Mexico, they met Cheech & Chong’s team. There were already Cheech & Chong branded cannabis products at the time, but the three men proposed the idea of a Cheech & Chong branded retail store.

Comedy duo Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong were prominent in the 1970s and 1980s for their stand-up comedy and films. Their image is closely tied with counterculture movements at the time, especially the use of marijuana.

Their line of cannabis products started in 2020.

With the connection to Cheech and Chong themselves, Brandt said he’s hoping to have the pair make a stop in Denton this fall.

There are additional Apothecaria shops open in The Colony, Frisco, Plano, Arlington and Mansfield. The new Denton store, at 207 S. Bell Ave., is now open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Plus, there are plans to extend throughout Texas and to other states.

“We’re just getting started,” he said.

Brandt said that along with Cheech & Chong’s products, the store carries about 20 other brands. All of the stores prioritize educating customers about cannabis, he said.

“When you come into our stores, we do not focus on selling,” he said. “We focus on education.”

Brandt said that some deals for potential new locations have been on hold since February due to concerns about Texas’ Senate Bill 3. The bill sought a total ban on consumable hemp-based products that contain THC, the main intoxicating chemical in marijuana.

The bill was vetoed by Gov. Greg Abbott last month, but revisions are currently being considered in a special legislative session that starts July 21.

Brandt said a ban on THC would only encourage people to get cannabis products through other means.

“There are just as many active cannabis users in states where it’s not legal versus states where it is legal,” Brandt said. “If [Texas bans THC products], people are still going to get them. They’re going to call their friend, versus getting it from an actual licensed place.”

The retailer's new Denton, Texas, store offers more space for merchandise and additional room for same-day fulfillment services

The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex continues to be a hotbed of retail development, and Target is the latest chain to expand its presence in North Texas.

Recently, the Minneapolis-based mass merchant opened a 147,000-square-foot store in Denton. The location, according to Target, is one of the retailer’s largest new builds and offers a glimpse into the company’s future as it focuses on large-format stores. The added space accommodates larger-than-average sections for fresh and frozen foods and beverages, highlighted by organic product options, a bakery and deli.

Beyond consumables, the additional square footage at the Denton North store also provides room for an Apple at Target shop-in-shop, a Starbucks café, and a large assortment of school supplies and sports apparel for local students.

More space has also been allocated for backroom fulfillment, which is about five times larger than older Target locations of similar size. This will support digital orders and the retailer’s Drive Up and Order Pickup services.

The Denton North store is an example of Target’s new strategy in the Lone Star State. Two additional locations are slated to open this year, with at least five more planned for the Dallas metro area in the coming years. Companywide, Target plans to open 300 new stores similar to the new Denton store in the years ahead.

Target’s strategy to open larger stores, in the range of 150,000 square feet, was launched in late 2022. The goal is to improve support for same-day services while allowing for a larger product assortment across store departments. The newer locations also feature increased lighting, natural elements, localized design features, and built-in sustainability.

Target is not alone in its desire to expand across the Dallas metropolitan area. Earlier this year, Kroger acquired land in Little Elm, Texas, about 20 miles east of Denton. The site, located at US-380 and FM-2931, will place the grocer’s new store adjacent to the yet-to-be-constructed, 225,000-square-foot Target-anchored Bates Towne Crossing.

Additionally, San Antonio, Texas-based H-E-B also continues to expand across its home state, with the Dallas region a target for new store development.
