Unfortunately for Tanesha Jones of Frisco, they're paying regular visits to her home too.

FRISCO, Texas — When Tanesha Jones moved to Frisco from her native Chicago, she expected maybe a bit of southern culture shock. She did not expect scorpions. And she did not expect them to pay her regular visits.

"I usually see one a week, one or two a week," she said. "With me being from Chicago, I'm not used to this type of thing...it's like oh my God!"

She added sticky traps as her line of defense inside her front door and at doors leading to and from her garage.

"They come in and get stuck and they die," she said.

In the last few months, she says she trapped nearly a dozen as they crawled under her doors.

"Yeah, it's frightening to say the least," Jones said about the scorpion encounters. "I guess they're welcoming me to Texas. I'm a country girl at heart. I'm not too squeamish. These I am squeamish about."

Ashley Morgan-Olvera, M.S., Director of Research & Education at the Texas Invasive Species Institute at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, said that a wetter summer means there's a lot more "creepy crawlies" around.

Morgan-Olvera says Tanesha's scorpions appear to be striped bark scorpions, native to Texas, venomous but not lethal, and growing about 2-and-3/8 inches long. They are often found in North Texas homes, like Tanesha's. Her townhome is in far north Frisco next to a greenbelt, and Morgan-Olvera surmises the scorpions are likely living and breeding in the wood mulch near the front door.

"They're starting to come out, the temperatures are lowering. They're getting one last breeding session in before wintertime," Morgan-Olvera said. "And she probably is seeing a new brood come out every night because they're going to be hatching and most active at night."

Entomologists also say several species of scorpion in Texas can serve a useful purpose. They eat spiders, ants and other pests. But that's not reassuring for Tanesha, who has made a decision.

"I bought a new house, I'm moving. I can't take it," she said. In fact, she closed on a new house the day we interviewed her.

"I'm moving. They can have it," she said with a laugh. "We can't live here together, only me. There's only room for one."

Construction financing is being provided by Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, and Prosperity Bank.

Additionally, the Fields West partnership shared that as part of the development agreement, the City of Frisco successfully executed the sale of $70 million municipal bonds on June 27 as part of their participation in Fields West. The Fields team is incredibly proud to partner with the great city of Frisco, Texas—one of the fastest-growing and most livable cities in the U.S.

Fields West is a 55-acre urban village in the heart of the greater Fields development, a 2,500-acre master-planned community. Fields West is led by developer Fehmi Karahan, President & CEO of The Karahan Companies, who is known for creating Legacy West, one of North Texas’ most successful mixed-use developments, Karahan is now bringing that same world-class standard to Frisco.

Fields West will offer 350,000 square feet of shopping, dining, and entertainment and 325,000 square feet of Class A office space seamlessly integrated into the vibrant walkable mixed-use center.

Construction of this one-of-a- kind shopping and dining destination has already begun, and the opening will be sequenced starting in Q3 2027 into 2028.

Currently 70% pre-leased, Fields West will feature a variety of national brands, boutique retailers, and first-to-market locations with some of the most sought-after names in fashion, beauty, and home décor. Among them, Bloomie’s, Bloomingdale’s innovative, ever-evolving store concept, will open its first Texas location at Fields West. Other highly anticipated retailers include Alo Yoga, Arhaus, Kendra Scott, Pottery Barn, Sephora, Williams Sonoma, and more.

Elevating the dining experience, Fields West will be home to an outstanding collection of restaurants, from local favorites to national icons. Guests can enjoy standout concepts like Green Point, Claremont, Mexican Sugar, Sixty Vines, and Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar, while Mastro’s Steakhouse – one of the most revered names in fine dining – will open its first DFW location, bringing its signature blend of sophistication and indulgence to the region.

FRISCO, Texas — Half a billion dollars can buy you 660 acres, a 500-room resort, two championship golf courses, a 75,000-square-foot putting green, 10 luxury ranch homes, a dozen or so restaurants and bars and something called a Topgolf lounge.

Apparently it can't buy you the respect of the world's best golfers, at least not yet.

The sprawling PGA Frisco compound -- which is set to host the men's PGA Championship in 2027 on its Fields Ranch East Course -- took a stray Wednesday from the most recent winner of the career grand slam.

Rory McIlroy was holding a press conference at the Scottish Open and talking about the various courses he'd like to win a major one day.

"I would love to win an Open at Portrush, absolutely," McIlroy said of this year's Open Championship site in his home country of Northern Ireland. "I would love to win an Open at St. Andrews. I would love to win a U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. I'd love to win a PGA at PGA Frisco -- not."

Ouch.

"But it's like there's venues in the game that just mean a little bit more," McIlroy said. "Frisco might get there one day, who knows."

Is McIlroy right in that assessment? Sure. It's hard to rank major wins above others -- at the end of the day, Jack Nicklaus has 18 majors and Tiger Woods has 15; they don't have a certain amount at "proper" venues -- but McIlroy and any other golfer on the planet would acknowledge that a few select courses carry a distinct level of aura. St. Andrews and Pebble Beach fall into that category, perhaps a category of their own.

Royal Portrush, in McIlroy's home country, would naturally carry more distinction for him. On the flip side, maybe PGA Frisco would produce a similar feeling for Dallas' own Scottie Scheffler, should he win the PGA in a couple of years.

McIlroy's comments Wednesday came on the heels of the recent complaints about PGA Frisco during the Women's PGA Championship last month. The handwringing was mostly about the course setup, not the course itself, as Golfweek detailed here, and the sweltering temps and gusty winds didn't help much either (welcome to North Texas in late June). There was also some social media chirping about the slow play and how the course looked on TV.

To be fair, the PGA Frisco courses -- both Fields Ranch East, designed by Gil Hanse, and the West, designed by Beau Welling -- have drawn solid reviews since opening in May 2023. The East Course barely missed Golf Digest's Top 200 rankings, no small feat for a newly-opened track. Fried Egg Golf, which goes deep on golf course architecture and design, has praised Hanse's blend of playability and challenge in the course. The Dallas Morning News ranked both Frisco courses in its Texas Top 50.

But this is how it goes in a game steeped in as much tradition as golf. It's hard for a newcomer to get as much respect as the St. Andrews and Oakmonts of the world. Erin Hills and Chambers Bay, two recent U.S. Open sites at newly constructed venues, faced similar scrutiny.

Maybe one day PGA Frisco will be viewed on the same level as the most prestigious venues in golf. Even Rory's giving it a chance.
